A brief history of Brutalist architecture mapped out on the footprint of the Barbican Estate.

Featuring over 150 influential architects, significant buildings, events and publications which were pivotal to the evolution of this architectural movement and its subsequent love/hate relationship with critics and the general public.

From the foundations laid at the start of the 20th century with pioneering works by the architect Le Corbusier, to the post-war boom spearheaded by architects such as Alison and Peter Smithson and Ernő Goldfinger with buildings such as Hunstanton School and Trellick Tower, to more recent schemes championing brutalism such as Innsbruik Ski Jump by Zaha Hadid and The Hepworth Wakefield by David Chipperfield

Central to this story is the history of the Barbican. London’s most famous brutalist estate. From Chamberlin, Powell & Bon’s first proposal for the area in 1955, to the official opening of the first building on the estate Speed House in 1969 and the completion and royal opening of the Barbican Centre in 1982.
