Barbican Chess Set by Adam Blencowe and Jamie Temple
Made exclusively for the Barbican in a limited edition of 25 sets, the shapes of the chess pieces are drawn from architectural forms found within the Barbican complex.
The finely carved surface treatment of Blencowe's chess pieces reflects the rusticated concrete textures of the buildings which were originally achieved by the effects of labour-intensive pneumatic pick-hammering. A process of digital sculpting was employed to reproduce this impressive detail whilst allowing for a more contemporary production method.
The pieces are cast in fine plaster using a pigmented hardner, which allows for a high level of surface detail within a durable material. Each set is cast individually and finished by hand meaning they all differ slightly.
Temple's hand printed board is inspired by architectural processes inherent in Brutalist structures. Using a reduction lino cutting technique, multiple layers of ink combine to create a surface similar to the textural qualities of poured concrete..
The set is presented in a handmade Solander box with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artists and numbered in an edition of 25.
